La Roche Posay - Physiological Make-up Remover Micellar Water Gel Review

Monday 3 August 2015

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last few years, it’s more than likely that you’ve heard of, if not swear by some kind of micellar water. Well as always, La Roche Posay have up'd their skincare game once more and have launched ‘Micellar Water Gel’.

I was quite excited to try this product as i’m a huge fan of micellar water, and was intrigued by this new gel. As you know already, it’s designed to remove make up and cleanse the skin, with all the benefits of no soap, no alcohol, no colorants and no parabens with makes it perfect for those of you with sensitive skin.

The bottle comes in the 195ml pump bottle, and the gel itself is dispensed clear.

On the website it advises you to apply to a wet face, however i’ve been using it like i would normal micellar water - with cotton pads and it works just the same in my opinion. At first it took me a couple of attempts to get the right amount out without using too little or too much. For me I use two cotton discs with one pump of gel on each disc. I find this is enough to remove all my make up (including eye make up). If you need more you can do another pump on another disc. I wouldn’t recommend using two pumps on one disc as it was way too much and i had to wipe some of the excess away.

What I like about this product is that with the pump feature you get more use out of the product. When i have normal micellar water, i seem to go through it like nobody’s business but i’ve noticed the gel has been lasting me a lot longer than the regular water would. I have no complaints what so ever about the products performance, as always La Roche Posay has done it again with another amazing product.

If you love using micellar water, but looking to up your skin care game, or simply get better use of your products, I would recommend picking up some Physiological Make-up Remover Micellar Water Gel next time you are at the pharmacy.

Herbal Essences - Clearly Naked Shine

Sunday 21 June 2015

Herbal Essences have just upped their games and released the “Cleary Naked” range. This new range answers the high demand for paraben, silicone and colourant free hair care. Lately people(myself include) have been caring a lot more about the products we use and the ingredients that go into them and how that can effect us overall. So I’m glad that Herbal Essences have been listening to the masses and released this range. This range comes with 3 different formulas - Volume, Moisture and Shine.

"If you crave soft, silky hair that glistens in the sunshine, then reach for our NEW Clearly Naked Shine Collection. Get naked and indulge your senses with the lively scent of white tea and mint, while the shine-boosting formula lightly conditions and revitalises your hair. No heavy residues, dyes or parabens – just soft, shiny, naturally irresistible hair!"

Lately I’ve been using the ‘Shine’ version of the range and I have to say, I have been loving it.  Unlike other paraben free shampoos that I’ve tired, ‘clearly naked’ soaps up pretty well, and leaves my hair not only looking great, but smelling great too. There is something about the subtle white tea and mint scent that is delicious. The conditioner also soaks into my hair and leaves it smooth and shiny. I’m definitely a convert! Also knowing that i’m using a product that is nasty stuff free, makes me feel better.

If you are looking for an affordable hair care range without all the nasties, you should definitely be picking up some 'Clearly Naked’ by Herbal Essences - Available from all leading outlets in Malta priced €5.99

Melanoma Awareness Month - Persona

Monday 18 May 2015

The month of May being dedicated to Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness brings the risks associated with sun exposure and the link with potential skin cancers to the fore of public opinion. To support this global health initiative, Persona Med-Aesthetic Centre, in collaboration with its team of leading dermatologists and supported by SkinCeuticals Advanced Skincare, shall be offering a number of free consultations for mole assessment throughout May, thereby increasing awareness about the importance of prevention and early detection of melanoma.

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that develops from melanin-producing cells, which are normally located in the basal layer of the epidermis or within the dermis, the outer layer of the skin. Aggressive forms of melanoma can spread to almost any organ in the body, making it of vital importance to detect it an early stage.

By far the biggest risk for developing melanoma is sun damage (UV radiation). The effects of sun damage are cumulative, meaning that they build up over time. Up to the age of around 30, cells recover quickly from damage and thus visible damage like sunspots, wrinkles and moles are relatively rare. Nonetheless every episode of sun exposure builds up damage (especially in sunny climates like Malta), which comes apparent and visible later in life.

Unfortunately, local dermatologists have seen a sharp rise in cases of melanoma over the last years. Experts indicate that this rise is due to a couple of different factors, such as the depletion of the ozone layer, popularity of tanning beds, more revealing fashion styles, and social norms encouraging the desirability of tanned skin. While it’s true that our bodies need a daily dose of Vitamin D, absorbing enough sunlight to reach your daily requirements is no problem for people living in Malta. With the amount of sun hours and strength of the UV rays in Malta, our daily required dose is easily satisfied without the need for any extra effort.

To protect against the harmful effect of UV radiation, it is recommended to seek shade and avoid the sunniest hours of the day, roughly between 11.00 and 16.00. When outdoors, try to protect your skin as much as possible, wearing a hat, sunglasses and clothing that covers you skin. Also, as a general rule of thumb, it is highly recommended to use a high factor broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF50+) throughout the year, especially in our sun-blessed Malta. In the summer months it is important to re-apply your sunscreen every 2-3 hours throughout the day when exposed to the sun.

Together with SkinCeuticals, Persona Med-Aesthetic Centre emphasizes on the fact that for optimal protection, the use of antioxidants in combination with a bread-spectrum sunscreen will be greatly beneficial and increase one’s protection level against harmful UV & IRA rays. Recent studies show that IRA (infra red radiation) is also responsible for skin’s photo-damaging effects, hence modern sun protection should include filters, that provide IRA protection as well. Whereas sunscreens protect against UVA and UVB radiation from the outside, antioxidants work from the inside, protecting against free radicals formation and DNA damage to skin caused by UV & IRA rays. Studies show that even the best sunscreen, when applied, offers up to 55% protection against UV damage, but when combined with a powerful and well-formulated antioxidant, protection levels rise even up to 98%. In this light, during the month of May, Persona is offering a Free sunscreen to all those who purchase one of SkinCeuticals’ revolutionary antioxidant products,  to help educate on the importance of combining and anti-oxidant with a high SPF sunscreen in one’s daily routine.
Another important element in the fight against melanoma is self-examination, for you to detect suspicious lesions as early as possible, and bring these to the attention of your dermatologist at a very early stage when treatment has a very high success-rate.

A popular method for self-examination is the ABCDE-method, where the letters stand for 5 indicating factors of melanoma; A - for Asymmetry in shape, B – for irregular Borders, C – for Colour variations, D – large (6mm+) Diameter, E – for Evolution that marks a change over time.
‘Dermatologists world-wide insist that there’s nothing healthy about a sun tan, therefore through this campaign, we hope more people will become aware of the dangers of unprotected or inadequately-protected sun exposure’, says Kate Demanuele, General Manager of Persona Med-Aesthetic Centre. ‘Prevention and early detection measurements of skin cancer, can save lives, therefore we hope this campaign will have its needed impact on people’s lifestyle and their skin health.’

By harnessing the power and influence of print and social media, Persona’s aim is to spread the message about melanoma as far and wide as possible. Various informative materials will be spread through Persona’s website (www.persona.com.mt) and its Facebook page (Persona Med-Aesthetic Centre) as well as through the local facebook page of SkinCeuticals, and through local bloggers and media, hoping to reach a bigger crowd.

We remind the public that as part of its SkinCeuticals year-long charity campaign launched earlier this year, Persona will donate 5% of all SkinCeuticals 2015 sales to Hospice Malta at the end of 2015.
SkinCeuticals antioxidants and high quality, broad-spectrum sunscreens are available exclusively at Persona Med-Aesthetic Centre in Ta’ Xbiex or can also be purchased online through the website www.persona.com.mt. Readers can contact Persona on 21340366 or info@persona.com.mt.

Olay Total Effects 7 in 1 Radiance Enhancing Cream Wash Review

Wednesday 29 April 2015

If you’ve been following my blog you’ll know that I’ve already reviewed a couple of Olay Total Effect products, you can catch up those review here – Olay 7 in 1 Eye Cream & Olay 7 in 1 Day Moisturiser, and today I’ll be chatting about another product from the same line – the Radiance enhancing Cream Wash. I’ve been testing the cream wash was the last few weeks and I’ve really been loving it. The product is a 7 in 1 product that claims to:
  • Gently exfoliate to improve skin softness
  • Improves light reflection from the skin surface
  • Improves skin smoothness
  • Enhances hydration to improve skin elasticity
  • Polishes away dry surface skin cells
  • Gently removes makeup and everyday impurities
  • Helps reduce the appearance of fine lines

Personally I enjoy using a cream wash as I find it more nourishing for my skin, and what I particularly like about the Olay cream is that it has tiny exfoliating beads in it that are just strong enough to lightly buff the skin, but gentle enough that I can use it every day. I start off by damping my face with warm water by using a face cloth, I then apply the cream to my fingers and massage it into my skin and neck, paying particular attention to around my nose so that I lift up all my foundation. To finish I simply wipe off the residue with my face cloth and pat dry and after apply my Olay 7 in1 Day Moisturiser and Olay 7 in 1 eye cream.
After using the Radiance cream wash, I noticed that it didn’t leave my skin feeling dry like some washes can, actually it was quite the opposite - my skin felt hydrated and plump, and as mentioned above I love the exfoliating beads as it buffs away the days impurities. This is an all round great face wash/make up remover. For best results it’s suggest you use it mornings and evenings.
While you might think that this product is aimed at people with mature skin, don’t be fooled as it’s never too early to start looking after your skin properly. While people with mature skin will see more benefits, younger skin will also be maintained for longer by being proactive rather than reactive to ageing skin.
Olay Total Effects Radiance Enhancing Cream Wash is available from leading stores around Malta, priced €19.45*. For more information check out the VJ Salomone Facebook Page.

Wellaflex Hairspray Review

Wednesday 22 April 2015

While I love trying out the latest lipsticks and make up removers, sometimes we forget about everyday basics that we’ve been using for years and take for granted. Today I’m talking about hairspray, more specifically – Wellaflex hairspray.
You might be thinking – all hairsprays do the same thing right? In a way – yes, but have you ever tried one of those cheap nasty hairsprays that make your hair super sticky and leaves your hair looking worse? If not, you’re lucky but I’m sure most of us has been there.
For me, when I’m looking for a hairspray, I need something that has a good hold but not sticky, and if it smells nice then that’s an added bonus. Recently I’ve gotten fed up with my usual straight hair and fancied something different, so lately I’ve been using my deep barrel waves to give my hair some shape and volume, but I needed something to keep my new style in place and wellaflex has been doing an excellent job. It’s keep the waves in their original shape, but also lets my hair move naturally so I don’t have ‘helmet hair’. The spray is fine enough not to make my hair sticky, but also strong enough to keep my waves in all day – which I have a huge problem with as my hair is so fine, almost every style falls out.

I have been using strength 5 for my hair to keep the style in place, but there is different strengths available. to suit your needs. On top of it all,  I love the fruity smell. I remember as child my mum apply layers of hairspray and choking, but Wellaflex has a pleasant smell.
If you’re looking for a new hairspray for your summer waves or your up-do I would recommend picking up a can of wellaflex.
Wellaflex is priced €4.35* and is available from leading stores around Malta. For more information, visit the VJ Salomone Facebook Page

Vichy Pureté Thermale 3 in 1 Cleanser

Monday 20 April 2015

While I love spending time applying make up, I actually equally enjoy removing it at the end of the day. For me there is nothing like winding down after a busy day, slipping into some pyjamas and removing my make up before settling down and watching my favourite shows.

My dressing table is cluttered with all kinds of cleansers, toners, eye makeup removers, lipstick remover and such and I’m always keen to try something new and make my life less cluttered. Thats when I came across the new Vichy Pureté Thermale 3 in 1 Cleanser*. Not only does it act as a cleansing milk, it also tones and removes eye make up. So now in the evening I only need one product to remove all my make up.

The Vichy Pureté Thermale 3 in 1 Cleanser is cross between a liquid and cream. It’s suitable for sensitive skin and is fragrance and paraben free. I having been using this with cotton pads and it removes my make up like a dream. It’s especially good at removing my eye make up, i sometimes find that water based eye make up removers are sometimes dry my lashes and make it a little harsh to remove all my mascara properly, the creamyness of this cleansers stops that and my mascara just slips off hassle free.

I would recommend picking up the Vichy Pureté Thermale 3 in 1 Cleanser to everyone, especially if you have sensitive skin and looking for a fragrance free and paraben free cleanser. Vichy is available from all pharmacies around Malta and Gozo. For more information check out the Vichy Facebook page.

What cleanser are you currently using? Do you prefer a multipurpose product or to use separate products?

Vichy Dermablend 16Hr Foundation

Saturday 18 April 2015

So when it comes to foundation, I normally stick to what I know best. I like a full coverage foundation (I don’t like my freckles) and normally reach for Estee Lauder - Double wear as it gives me a complete coverage, but I always found it quite heavy on my skin.

When I heard about the Vichy Dermablend foundation, I had to give it a try as it promised a full coverage without the heaviness. I have to say I haven’t been disappointed. The Vichy dermablend 16 hr foundation is just perfection. The formula is light weight yet the coverage is full. I applied this using my new beauty blender (review coming soon) and I was just blown away with the results. Not only did it cover all my freckles and imperfections, it blended like a dream and didn’t have that cakey felling you get with full coverage foundations.

The best part of it all is it lasts for up to 16 hrs and has SPF 35 so it’s perfect for your everyday foundation. I wore it for around 12-13hrs and it was still looking good at the end of the day. This is my holy grail of foundation. If you’re like me and like a full coverage foundation and normally reach for Double Wear, I would highly recommend you pick up some Vichy dermablend, not only is it half the price, in my opinion it does a better job as well.

Vichy Dermablend 16Hr Foundation is available from pharmacies across Malta, priced €17.90*

They will shortly be launching the other products of Dermablend in Malta later in the year such as the compact foundation, corrective stick and finishing powder. So keep your eyes peeled.

Taylor Swift Red Lips - Nars Dragon Girl

Thursday 19 March 2015

I may not be a teenager anymore, and on the wrong side of 25 but I have to admit I quite like ok...love Taylor Swift. That’s right I’m a secret Swifty. But darn, that girl just looks good all the time. I especially love her red pout, and with a little research I found out the exact make and shade....Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in the shade - Dragon Girl.

Dragon girl is a matte orange toned red lipstick in pencil format that I find to be really creamy in texture but quite thick at the same time. I find the pencil format very easy to use, and its great for precision especially for such a pigmented product.

You really only need one application of this product and it will last for hours. I have to confess, this is actually my first Nars lip stick and I have been really impressed with the formula and pigmentation. I really can’t wait to get my hand on more...I feel a new addiction starting.

So there you have it - Taylor Swifts favourite lip product...and we can see why.

Which Nars shades do you recommended I get my hands on next?

My Polaar Skin care routine - Ice Pure

Sunday 22 February 2015

If you follow me on social media, you might remember I attended an event by Polaar skin care last year. I had a great time at the event, and especially enjoy getting to make my on face scrub.

If you've never heard of Polaar, they are a very interesting brand. "Polaar’s adventure begins 30 years ago with a nice story. It is the story of a teenager, the son of two polar explorers, who embarks on the Vagabond, an icebreaker heading to the Far North , on a scientific mission. That was the moment when Daniel Kurbiel discovered the ability of arctic plants to survive in extreme conditions." The active ingredients are sourced from the Arctic, they are pure and contain no parabens, alcohol or  mineral oils.

At the moment, I'm currently using a pure Polaar skin routine to get the maximum benefits of the products.

Arctic Cotton gentle scrub

This a gentle scrub that i've been using twice a week, however I find it gentle enough to use more often when I feel my skin needs it. The product comes in a thick cream formula and had tiny exfoliating beads that lightly buff the skin. The Pure Ice arctic cotton scrub has a light yet distinctive scent, which I find had to describe, but it fits very well with the name, as in an outdoor, cold, fresh scent (which sounds bizarre, but when you smell it you'll know what I mean)

Moisturising gel
After using the exfoliator, I follow with the moisturising gel, its very light weight (lighter than a traditional cream), however I find this to be more hydrating. It's non-greasy and soaks into the skin within seconds and drys matt which works perfectly has a make up base.

Icy Magic
To finish off before applying make up, I use the Icy Magic - instant eye contour. This is applied via a cold roller ball which helps sooth and de-puff the under eye area. I find this particularly refreshing in summer, but its a great product to use all year round.

Polak is available from various pharmacies on the island.
For more information on Polaar, check out their Facebook page

[Event] Persona SkinCeuticals

Monday 19 January 2015

On Friday night I headed to the Westin Dragonara in St.Julians for an evening with Persona Med Aesthetic Centre to introduce us to SkinCeuticals. First up, upon arriving I ran into Lara (Every beauty addicts bible) and Steph (Think Love Make Up) - great! So as we walked the red carpet we got our photos taken, for this we took our jackets off and I noticed they were dressed very smart (I rocked up in jeans and a shirt). The kindly told me the invite said “cocktail dress”...what a doofus!! I looked around and everyone else was in shirts and smart dresses. doh!

Persona clinic is actually a place I’ve been to before, if you’ve been reading my for a few years you’ll remember I went there for laser hair removal and was really pleased with the service. You can read the old post - here

Anyway, we were treated to a champagne reception while chatting amongst ourselves. Next up we entered the ballroom for a talk from various experts in the industry including the SkinCeuticals education manager who’d flown all the way from Dubai for the evening. Even the president of Malta was there among some other ‘famous’ faces. It was a great turnout.

The SkinCeuticals motto is - Prevent, Protect and Correct. They have a wide range of skin care, which is often prescribed my dermatologists to their clients so they can see the real results they are looking for.

Dr Sheldon Pinnell a renowned American research dermatologist was a pioneer of cosmeceuticals in the US and the founder of SkinCeuticals. Which has been providing advanced skincare to medical professionals since 1997. Research and innovation are the core of the skinceuticals mission. The company’s founding was the direct result of a revolutionary discovery that set the standard for antioxidant formulations.

Behind the seating area, was a product bar and a skin analysis booth which we of course checked out. I was glad to learn my skin was looking good for my age!

Overall, I had a really lovely evening and it was good to catch up with the girls and meet some new people. The SkinCeuticals range looks really interesting and can’t wait to try some samples I picked up on the evening, so keep an eye of for those reviews.

Have you tried SkinCeuticals?
